The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park has its roots in the historic Skipjacks, the last sailing fishing vessels of the Chesapeake Bay. In 1979, a group of local activists, known as the Skipjack Preservation Association began advocating for the preservation of the Bay’s unique working vessels, and the Annapolis Maritime Museum and Park (AMMP) was formed. In 1984, the museum opened in an old commercial fishing shed known as the “Ship’s Store.” This, along with a nearby commercial fishing net shanty, served as the museum’s visitor center for the next several years. In 1993, the museum acquired its first piece of land and the building that now serves as the museum’s main building was built shortly thereafter. Over the years, the museum has grown to encompass over twelve acres, with six historic buildings and a fleet of historic boats, including two original skipjacks. The museum’s main building serves as a hands-on education center, with interactive exhibits and displays on maritime history, Bay ecology, and more.  The museum also houses an extensive maritime library and archives, as well as a permanent exhibit exploring the history of the Chesapeake Bay and its ports.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park is also home to a waterfront area on historic Spa Creek with a large pavilion, water taxis and boat rentals, and a floating dock. The dock offers visitors a unique view of the Chesapeake Bay and is the site of many community events throughout the year, such as the museum’s annual Oyster Festival. The museum also sponsors educational and recreational boat trips, offering a variety of programs, including bird-watching trips, sailing trips, and more. Additionally, the museum’s waterfront area is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding. The visitor center also offers audio walking tours of the area’s historic waterfront.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park also houses a variety of cultural and educational programs and activities, from boat-building workshops to fishing clinics. The museum also sponsors special events throughout the year, such as living history programs and holiday celebrations.
